GoToWebinar’s feature announcement slideout and tooltip walkthrough


LogMeIn offers over 15 products, ranging from consumer products to complex enterprise software 

One of their most popular products, GoToWebinar, has long been a top choice among marketing professionals for their webinar hosting. GoToWebinar has changed a lot over the years—it began as an enterprise desktop solution, but has since been redesigned and repositioned to include a beautiful web app, a free trial process, and robust user guidance throughout the product journey.

Part of creating a product-led experience involves communicating with your regular users and helping them discover new and deeper value with your product. When they launched their Transcripts feature, GoToWebinar used Appcues to launch a beautifully designed, targeted feature announcement in minutes. 

Let’s take a look at GoToWebinar’s new feature announcement and walkthrough—and explore why it’s an example of really good UX for enterprise.

The GoToWebinar Transcripts feature announcement

When a repeat user logs into GoToWebinar, an animated slideout appears, letting them know that there’s a new feature available for them to check out:

When the user clicks the “see how it works” CTA they’re launched into a brief product tour that starts off by showing them where to find the new feature.

GoToWebinar then walks users through every click they’ll need to access the transcript functionality.

The tour concludes by setting user expectations about what happens once they transcribe a recording. Linking to the support docs also ensures that the user will know where to go for detailed help, if they need it.

Why this is really good UX

The ability to create a transcript of their recording with a few clicks is clearly a valuable functionality for GoToWebinar’s users. But it’s also a fairly “hidden” feature—a short walkthrough makes sure users don’t miss out.

We like that GoToWebinar kept the walkthrough brief—there are 5 steps in total—and was sparing with the amount of copy in each step. This flow was targeted to returning users who probably don’t need too much hand-holding. This walkthrough feels thorough, but not dragged out.

And the slideout and tooltips match the look and feel of GoToWebinar’s branding and iconography (see: the cute little robot). Consistent styling creates a seamless experience, and helps the user experience layer feel like a part of the underlying product. 

Why this really good UX really matters

Feature adoption is correlated with product stickiness. GoToWebinar knows that the more features a user adopts, the less likely they are to churn.

But you can’t force users to adopt features—they need to see its value, understand how it fits into their workflow, and know where to find it again on their own.

All in all, we think the GoToWebinar team did a great job!
